Linwood Holton first grade students spend time each school year learning about animals. They study animal classifications and learn how mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians are similar and different. They learn about wild and tame animals and body coverings. Each child will create an "animal diorama" which they will present to the class. The diorama displays one animal in a shoe box that the student has chosen and wants others to learn more about, too.
1. Using books and other resources, the student will write five facts about this animal using complete sentences on writing paper. The five sentences must include:
·whether the animals is wild or tame
·the kind of body covering of the animal (i.e. fur)
·the method in which the animal moves (i.e. hops)
·the kind of home/habitat of the animal (i.e. ocean)
·something interesting about the animal ( i.e. They like to eat strawberries.)
2.A shoebox is then decorated to look like the animal's habitat.
3.The diorama must show the animal living in its natural habitat. The animal can be a plastic toy, made of clay, a cut out picture, or a drawing of an animal.
